Owl "square" - free pattern

Svenskt mönster

octagonal owl - with 4 long sides, 4 short sides

Materials:

• scrap yarn (eg Tilda, Drops Love You)
• crochet hook 3 mm and 2,5 mm 
• yarn needle to weave in ends

sl st - slip stitch

dc - double crochet

sc - single crochet

hdc - half double crochet

tr - treble double crochet

eor - end of row

*-* repeat 

sdc - standing double crochet without sl st and ch

ssc - standing single crochet without sl st and ch (using same technique as dc)

CL - cluster, group of dc

c - color

ch sp - chain space

sp - space

lp(s) - loop(s)

sk - skip

c1 - white

c2 - light green

c3 - pink

c4 - yellow

c5 - blue

It takes approx 5,8 m of yarn to make one owl square with only one color. With eyes and beak a little more than 6 m. Mixing colors or change color each row takes more, since you need to weave in ends.

Round 1 

Using c1 make a Magic Ring, ch 3, dc 13... 

... sl st in first dc. Cut yarn.
[14 sts]

Round 2

Fasten c2 between two sts using 
standing double crochet, joining without sl st and ch (sdc)
or 
fasten yarn and make as many ch you need
 to make sc (1), hdc (2), dc (3), tr (4) 
troughout the pattern.

... *dc 2 between each dc from previous round*
repeat *-* till eor, sl st. 

Cut yarn. 
[14 CL= total of 28 sts]

 Round 3 (pink) & Round 4 (yellow)

I'm sorry about the missing photo of only round 3.

rnd 3) Fasten c3 between two CL using sdc 
*dc 3, ch 1 between each CL* till eor, sl st.
Cut yarn. [14 CL= total of 42 sts]

rnd 4) Fasten c4 between CL using ssc, ch 3
*sc in next ch sp (between CL) ch 3* 

till eor, sl st in first lp. Do not cut yarn. [14 lps]

Round 5 (yellow)

Continue with c4, ch 3, dc 3 in lp 
*dc 4 in every lp* till eor, sl st. 
[14 CL= 56 sts]

 Round 6

Fasten c5 in any first st of a CL, using the same technique as 
sdc but making a tr (or ch 4), ch 2 + sl st 1 in first ch 
(= 1 picot), tr 2 more in same st, dc 1 in next 2 sts, 
hdc 1 in next 2 sts, sc 1 in next 2 sts, 
hdc 1 in next 2 sts, dc 1 in next 2 sts,
tr 2 in next st, ch 2 + sl st 1 in first ch (picot), 
ch 3 and sc 1 in same st as the tr.

This part forms the top of the owl, with the ears.

Continue round 6 with picots like this:
*ch 2, sc 1 in first ch, sk 1 st, sc 1* till eor,
 sl st at the bottom of the first tr and cut yarn. 

Weave in all ends.

This is how it looks like right now.

Round 7

 Begin behind 2nd dc of CL under right ear...

...using crochet hook 2,5 mm, 
fasten yarn c1 in the loop on back of dc on round 5... 

... and sc loosely:

*sc 2 in 1 st, sc 7, sc 2 in 1, sc 2 in 1, sc 3, sc 2 in 1* 

repeat *-* till eor, sl st.

Round 8 

Using 3 mm hook:

ch 2, hdc 1 in same st, hdc 9, hdc 2 in 1, hdc 7

Cut yarn and weave in ends.

The back of the finished "square" with 8 edges;
4 long sides and 4 small sides (corners).

Eyes

Use hook 3 mm

Magic Ring, dc 14. 

Cut yarn but leave long enough end to use 

when you sew eye on to owl.

Pupils
I sew on pupils, but you can use buttons, felt etc to make pupils.

Fasten yarn in the back and pull through where you want 
your pupil, ...

... make a loose knot and pull it as close to the "eye" as you can... 

... pull needle to the back again...

Taa-daah!...leaving a nice little pupil in front! :-)

Beak

Use hook 2,5 mm

ch 9, dc 1 in 4th ch from hook, dc 1, hdc 2, 
sc 1 and sl st in last st. 

Cut yarn. 
You'll have the two ends on the same side.

Weave both ends along the sides to the widest end of the beak
 and fasten one. You'll only need one to sew on to owl.

Sew a few stitches at the wides part of beak, across the 2 first dc
(where the needle is on photo).
 Wrongside against rightside of owl.

After the stitches are done and you've weaved in the end,
 pull the beak forward-down and you'll have a nice little bend beak!

Play with the eyes, where do you want the pupils?
Make fine stitches along the sides of the eyes.

The size is approx 12 cm.

4 sides are supposted to be longer and 4 sides (corners) are shorter!
